Heavy Stuff
I liked playing the ancient asian board game "Go" (also goes by the names Weiqi or Baduk) for a long time so I decided to build myself my own game board. If you think of chess as the battle, Go is the war as the two players try to surround territory with their play stone and take territory from the enemy. When ordering a tree for it in the wood workshop in the academy and cutting it open the chainsaw got stuck in a piece of metal. We pulled out a small splinter from the tree. The teacher in the workshop then told me, that this happens quite often when he gets trees from a certain region in Nuremberg. It was bomb shrapnel from a World War 2 bomb. Since this whole project was suddently loaded with symbolism, I decided to make it into an artwork instead of just a pretty game board for myself. Since the war in Ukraine started the thought of myself, as an ablebodied man in his 20s, having to actually fight in a war in my lifetime came to my mind for the first time. I sculpted my own head in Blender and 3D printed it to create the feet for the Go Board. What you can see is me in four different futures reacting to what is happening with the weight of the game board resting on their heads. The work is not yet finished as I still want to melt the bomb splinter and form it into a playstone.
